Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy / RSD

skeleton and arm muscle illustration

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy, also called complex regional pain syndrome, is a chronic, painful and progressive neurological condition that affects the skin, muscles, joints and bones. The symptoms usually develop in an injured limb such as a broken leg, or following surgery. However, many cases of reflex sympathetic dystrophy involve only a minor injury such as a sprain, and in some cases no precipitating event can be identified.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is characterized by varying degrees of burning pain, excessive sweating, swelling and sensitivity to touch. Pain usually begins in either a foot or hand and moves proximally toward the thigh or shoulder and rarely can crossover to the opposite side.

Untreated Reflex sympathetic dystrophy can become very debilitating, therefore early diagnosis and treatment are absolutely essential.

Dr. Linehan and the medical professionals of Precision Pain Care will evaluate you and formulate a comprehensive management plan. Based on your specific condition, the plan may include: selective sympathetic nerve blocks (Stellate ganglion blocks for arm RSD and lumbar sympathetic blocks for leg RSD), physical therapy, psychological intervention and, if necessary, more aggressive procedures such as spinal cord stimulator implantation
